Gem Imports Glossary

As one of the Uk's Largest wholesale suppliers we have created a Gem Imports glossary that will allow those who are new to wholesale to quickly recognise certain terms on our website and across the industry.

"What is wholesale?"

Wholesale is a business model of selling large quantities/bulk at low prices. Once a business or individual buys wholesale products they are then usually retailed at a profit. 

Glossary

Carton

This is the number of one product within a box. Most of our Products at Gem imports are supplied in cartons of 24, 36 ,48. 

Containers

A shipping container is solid metal box used to transport manufactured products and goods from A to be B.

Dropship

Dropshipping is the business model of buying inventory and fulfilment logistics from a third party usually a wholesaler or manufacturer to fulfil orders. 

EORI number

An Economic Operators registration and identification number (EORI) is required if you move goods. 

• Between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) or the isle of Man and any other country (Including the EU) 
• Between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
• Between Northern Ireland and countries outside of the UK.

Invoice

An invoice is raised to get payment from the customer. A receipt is issued after receiving the payment from the customer. 

MOV 

Suppliers use Minimum order value (MOV) or minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the minimum order value that a customer needs to spend in order to be able to check out. This value varies from supplier to supplier. At Gem imports our Minimum order value is always £500. 

Lead time

Also known as turnaround time. This is the time it takes (Usually days) from the moment the order is placed until the order is shipped from a wholesale seller to retailer.

Pallet

A pallet allows for efficiencies in storage and handling by providing the base for assembling, handling and transporting materials and products.

SKU

A SKU stands for stock keeping unit, a number that retailers or suppliers assign to  products to keep track of stock internally. 

On the Gem imports website you will see this displayed as product code. 

Pallet Wrap 

Pallet wrap is spun around the product cases and layers to secure the goods for transport.

Pre-order

Pre-order allows customers to place an order on an item or range in advance of it arriving into the warehouse. 

On the Gem imports website you will see anything available on pre-order to have a visible pre-order flag.

Tail-lift

A tail lift is a mechanically - operated platform mounted to the end of a vehicle. The use is to facilitate the material handling of goods from ground level.
